Throughout this semester I have enjoyed this English class the most. All of the assignments have been fun and because I enjoyed doing them, I have been able to learn so much and grow as a writer. I am most proud of the personal narrative essay I wrote. This essay allowed me to grow emotionally as I opened up about my personal life. I also loved learning how to become more of a descriptive writer and use transition words correctly. I enjoyed the podcast we did because it made me get out of my comfort zone. At first, I was scared because I was paired with a girl I did not know in my English class and I thought it was going to be awkward. I quickly learned it was not awkward at all and rather it was enjoyable. I have learned in this class more in-depth about ethos, logos, pathos, and kairos. I had never heard of kairos and I think it is very important and can be very useful in understanding the meaning of it. Also, I have learned how to consider the rhetorical situation, the author, the audience, and the use of rhetorical situations. Normally when reading a story, you don't think of what the author's purpose was in writing the story but when you can identify that it can give the story more meaning and a more in-depth look at it. I have gotten better at writing longer essays this semester as it can be hard for me because I tend to get straight to the point.
During this semester I have improved on my writing strategies and habits. I used to sit down and just start writing my essay but now I plan out what I am going to write about. For my personal narrative, I made sections for the main topics I wanted to cover. I have learned if I don't make certain topics it can be easy to lose track of my thoughts and I will go off-topic. I also think it is so important to reflect on the essays I wrote after. I loved how after we would write an essay, we would do a self-reflection on how we did. In most classes you do an essay, turn it in, and never think about it again. I believe the reflection process made me realize what I wanted to improve on and what I accomplished.
My overall writing performance this year has improved as I would try harder every essay or assignment. The assignments in class we did would also help me understand exactly what was expected of me. One assignment in specific is when we practiced writing descriptive paragraphs with transition words. Also, meeting individually with you to discuss the assignment we were working on helped me the most. Sometimes I would be so far off of what you were expecting for the assignment and you could lead me back in the right direction. I couldn't be more thankful for all this English class has taught me and I can't wait to take this class again with you next semester.
