I wrote this introduction letter to introduce myself to my professor and tell her the goals and skills I want to achieve in her class and throughout my first semester of college.
intro letter
My name is Blakely Stegall and I am from Helena, Alabama. Growing up English has always been my favorite subject, although English comes more natural to me, I still have so much more learning to do. To be successful in this class and semester I believe it is important to set goals and skills to learn to achieve.
One goal I have set for myself is to manage time better. I tend to procrastinate and get assignments done at the last second. This school year I want to get far ahead on assignments, so I am not stressing out the last second, cramming it in. One way that could help me reach my goal is setting certain times to study. Thankfully, my sorority has assigned me fifteen study hours a week, which is a great opportunity to start getting ahead. I plan on studying three to four hours a day at the Phi Mu house.
Another goal I have set for myself is to try my best and to realize that sometimes, my best is not enough. Every student is different and learns in individual ways. I am not a good test taker, but this does not mean I am not smart. Sometimes, I get frustrated when I study hard for a test and then the person right next to me that did not study does better. This year, I want to not be knocked down when I feel defeated, but instead, celebrate others in their success. You cannot grow without failure, so when I do fail, I want to stay positive and try harder the next time.
The habits of mind are problem-solving skills that will help you along in life. There are two main ones I want to focus on this school year. The first one is creating, imagining, and innovating. I am going into Advertising so all of these things are necessary for me to be successful in this field. If I start thinking outside of the box now, it will better prepare me for when I need these skills in my major. I can achieve bettering myself by being original and proposing new ideas.
The next skill I want to better myself in is questioning and posing problems. I am an inquisitive person naturally, but the better my questions are the more I will learn in-depth about something. Also, asking questions in class could give me better clarity if I am confused about what exactly I am required to do. Before I leave a class I want to stop and think: "Am I confused about what I am expected to learn or to do?" If the answer is yes, then I need to raise my hand and ask a detailed question, so I know exactly what is expected.

reflection
The two goals I set for myself was to manage time better and to realize that sometimes my best is not enough.
Throughout this semester I have worked on my time management and improved. I still have need to work on it because I still tend to procrastinate on school work and studying at times.
This semester I have tried my best on my school work, and I accepted the fact that sometimes my best is not enough. In my intro letter I talked about how my major was Advertising. I took the Intro to Advertising class and quickly found out that that major is not for me. It was so hard and the material was not interesting to me. I am a very bad test taker and having all the tests and quizzes right out questions did not help me. I studied so hard and I had a D in there. At that point, I realized my best was not enough. I dropped this class so it would not bring my gpa down. I am going to switch my major to Marketing.
The learning skills I was going to work on were, creating, imaging, innovating, questioning and posing problems.
I think I have improved on these by thinking outside of the box and being original. Throughout this portfolio I have worked on being creative and unique. Also I have improved on asking specific questions to my professors/classmates to make sure I am on task.
